The Victory of Christ: Exploring the Book of Revelation takes you on an eye-opening journey through this influential yet puzzling book. You will learn about its origins on the Greek island of Patmos, the conventions of apocalyptic writing in the early Church, and how its original audience might have understood the text. Questions considered: How should we interpret its sometimes violent imagery? What is the symbolic meaning of its many numbers? Why are there so many hymns, and what purpose do they serve? Above all, you will come to understand the book’s self-designation as “a revelation of Jesus Christ.” In witnessing Christ’s victory over the forces of evil and chaos, you will emerge from this course with an invigorated sense of hope and understanding of the Word of God.
Presenter: Prof. Ian Boxall is a British New Testament scholar and an expert on the Book of Revelation. He is currently Associate Professor of New Testament at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He received his master’s degree and doctorate in the New Testament.
